SAPE Foundation Launches “Mother Rise Fund Initiative” aimed at supporting single mothers boost their micro-businesses for self-sustenance in Kasangati Town Council.
Kampala, Uganda — SAPE Foundation has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at strengthening the economic resilience of single mothers in Kasangati Town Council, a suburb of Kampala City. The Mother Rise Fund Initiative seeks to equip vulnerable women with micro-business support, financial literacy, and community savings skills, starting with an initial group of 30 single mothers.
The program was inspired by the personal story of the Foundation’s Founder, Richard Tusabe, who grew up in poverty as an orphan from the remote landing sites of Ssese Islands on Lake Victoria, and witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by single mothers in Uganda. His experience fuels SAPE Foundation’s mission to empower families through sustainable, community-centered solutions.
In November, the initiative supported its first cohort of five single mothers through seed capital provided by the Director. Each mother received $30 to boost her existing micro-business. Even this small amount allowed them to restock, revive failing ventures, and stabilize their income. The early success confirmed the need to scale the program immediately.
“In our village and from many of our neighboring communities, single mothers carry an immense burden—economically, emotionally, and socially,” Tusabe said. “Many survive on less than $2 a day and run informal businesses with under $50 in capital. With just a small boost and the right skills, they can transform their families’ future.”

DID YOU KNOW?
Recent reporting and the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS: 2024) indicate that the share of single mothers in Uganda has risen in recent years — from around 20% to close to 30% — increasing the numbers of women juggling sole caregiving and informal work with little access to loans or training. Poverty, instability, and lack of financial support continue to limit their potential.
Kasangati Town Council itself has a population of 277,685 — a rapidly growing peri-urban community with many vulnerable households of which mostly are female led households.
